How did the Rusty Pig founders choose items for their restaurant’s menu? Most are family recipes handed down and enjoyed at family gatherings.

In order to make sure that those recipes, and a few additions, would be well-liked by the general public, the two couples involved in creating the Rusty Pig Bar-B-Q Restaurants, Cindy and Neal Anderson and Greg and Angie Woolard, spent the entire year of 2008 taste-testing the various menu items. They invited friends and neighbors, church and civic groups and just about anyone with a willing palate to “taste test” the various menu items. All participants were asked to vote for their favorite version of each item. The results are being enjoyed at our two restaurants. The first Rusty Pig opened in the couples’, hometown, Glennville, GA, in 2009; the second restaurant opened in March of 2011 in Rincon, GA.

The Origins

  • Our BBQ Sauce recipes came from Neal’s maternal grandfather, Henry O’Neal, called “Big O” by his friends.
  • Our recipe for the Potato Salad is Angie’s specialty.
  • Baked Beans was a dish that Grandmother Uldine, Neal’s maternal grandmother, made for her family.
  • Our Cole Slaw recipe came from an unusual source–Gene Edwards, an officer of the parent company, brought this to the group.
  • Cindy is responsible for the Sad Cake, a crowd favorite.
  • Our Chewy Bread is a recipe handed down from Neal’s paternal great-grandmother, Grandmother Gladys.

Other recipes were received from relatives and friends and “refined” in the test kitchen during the year-long “tastings”.
